Default ES300 '01 slips out of gear in reverse

I have a 2001 ES300 that occasionally slips out of gear when I'm in reverse. It will do this on level ground about once a month. Recently, I tried to back up a steep incline and it slipped quite severly. I didn't think the car would make it up the hill. I purchased the car 4 years ago as a certified preowned from a dealer. It had 15k miles on it. I currently have 50k miles on it and have never had the tranny serviced, so I know it is due. The mechanic I take it to says there is evidence of leaking around the oil pan and the fluid looks dark (burnt). So maybe having the fluid changed will eliminate the problem.

I've also heard there are a couple of electrical sensors that connect to the tranny that may be faulty. Has anyone experienced this problem before?
