Transmission~
I have a ES300 1998, and just recently the gear changing jerks the car most of the time. Sometimes it's fine sometimes is jerks and it's so unsmooth. Does anyone know why this might be happening?
Thanks~

Whoa!
Hey, the exact same thing happens to me. Lexus can't do anything about it. I took it in 3 times. The said they didn't even feel the jolt. The first time, they said it was my engine mounts, so they replaced those. Then they said it was that i was leaking power steering fluid. Had that stuff replaced. Third time, they had my transmission and engine spread out on the floor for 2 days, then put it back in. I get the car bck the next day. It still jolts! Lots of money put in, for nothing. They did nothing for me. I still do not know what it is, but I am tired of having to leave my car at the dealer while they play around with it only to find nothing. If your car is jolting between usually 1st to second, or second to 3rd, that is the same as mine. Sometimes it is smooth, other times, horrible shaking. Let me know if you find anything out about this. Thanks. Eric

There was a similar topic in the LS400 forums. I have the same problems with my 90's LS4 with high miles. If you drive your car hard or on hills alot there's muc more wear on the transmission. I'm assuming since you took it to the dealer they changed and flushed the trans fluid. A complete job costs about $140+ that includes a new filter and fluid. Make sure they use the Toyota fluids.

mine does the same
oddly, my car started jerking hard after I replaced the spark plug wires on my car. Maybe it's a fluke, maybe it's related? I have no idea. I went to a shop to have them check it out and they told me to get a "Transmission service" where they change the fluids and change some gaskets? Anyone have any feedback about how helpful this would be and if it's worth the $100+ they want to do it?

epuffy, get the tranny service done. With a tranny fluid flush, new valve cover gaskets, and all that junk, it usually costs a bit more than $100 out here....but if you don't get that done (or at least change gaskets on older models), you can end up with nasty stuff in your engine. your oil might leak into the front, too.
anyway, just get it done and make sure they use that toyota dextron or whatever it is (i forget)

Thanks for the info
actually that's what i'm scheduled to do tomorrow morning. I wasn't too sure that would help, but I figured that's the first thing that makes sense. Hope it works! Thanks for the info and i'll let you know if it helps.

worked pretty good
just got my car back and for the most part (not all) the jerk between 1st and 2nd gear on my car is alot smoother. Also the downshift (disengage, or when you let go of the gas after accelerating) is smoother too. Pretty good for $100. I had an oil leak from my tranny and 2 shops told me before they had to pull out the whole thing and it would cost $500-700. The seals were included in the tranny service. Damn, I love honest people.

tranny
the people who said it would cost $500 to 700 all said they had to take out the whole tranny or take out lots of crap to get to the seal. but when I looked at it, it looked like you could just take off the bottom cover (where the filter and stuff is inside of), which IS what you can do. And thats what was included in the tranny service I got done today for $100. Finally, my car is leakless (I hope for the mostpart).

On my car, they replaced all the seals and a bunch of other crap that all could have been the cause, fulshed out the fluids, and had the guts of my car on the floor for 3 days... I get it back... still jerks...

i dunno
maybe its just because your cars old and so is the tranny. I have a 92, and it's pretty smooth for a 92 I think, but I don't expect it to be that smooth. For now atleast, i'm not gonna spend more cash than I already have to make it as smooth as possible. If you find out what's up with your car and to fix that problem, please let me know. I'll let you know if I do too, gotta go back to the shop soon anyways to get my struts replaced.

on older cars, the screws that go through your fluid pan gasket may become loose. tightening them up may do the trick. if your gasket has cracks, then you may need a replacement. if, because of a leak, the fluid level gets too low it may damage the trany or its components. once damaged, it doesn't matter what you do, you'll have a jerky trany. your only option then is to replace the broken parts.
