Default Tranny problem. car wont move, please input!

My buddy has a 96 ES300 and one day the car just stopped moving when in drive, you could put it in drive and floor it and nothing would happen. He assumed the tranny was bad so we got another one and installed it. yet it does the same thing. when in drive and pressing the gas it just sits there.....i was thinking maybe we didnt put enough fluid in the torque converter? Any ideas? maybe a computer issue?

Checking to see if it is the proper fluid level is of course a good idea. Since you replace the trans, we can rule out the trans/differential. Did you verify that the shift cable is actually moving the shift lever? Have someone move the shifter from park to low, while you see if the trans mounted lever is moving, the problem could be as simple as the cable breaking. Did you replace the torque converter? Even if the computer is not functioning properly, the trans should shift into a limp mode, which will allow the car to move.

PS. before you check the fluid level, slowly shift it thru all gears, letting it sit in each grear for a few seconds. If it is very low, add fluid and go thru the gears again.
