Default 02 Lexus ES300 Overdrive issue...

Just wanted to say Hello, being this is the first time I am posting and was wondering if anyone can help me out?

I just recently purchased an 02 ES300 and been having a problem with getiing the car to be in the D or Overdrive position. I have been reading up on all of the problems this transmission has from here and the other forum (47 efin pages lol) and seem to think that this is not related. I have driven the car for several days and have noticed that hesitation between 3-4th gear but only if you drive a certain way (my old Taurus used to do it so Iknow how to control it)

But has anyone ever had this issue where when you shift from park P to drive D it automaticall shifts to 4? And yes... I have the shifter located on the D not on the 4 on the shifter.

I will be bringing it back to where I purchased it and letting them know of the problem but was wondering what I should be expecting in repairs/story...

Any help is appreciated

TIA

Tim

PS...Coming from another forum I was always told not to start a thread without posting a Pic and I have yet to take any pics of the new (to me) car so enjoy a pic of my other car in the stable...The lexus might be replacing my 96 avalon with almost 240K miles Cheers

I wonder if a tranny mount is busted and the torque is causing the unit to twist and the shift lever moves to the left and then can't move any further. Just my first thought.

Put your hand on the shift and hold it in the D position, see if you feel any resistance or pressure from the shift, can you hold it in D?

Last thought is that the torque converter lock up (if that is the correct term) is not working.

In any case, bring it back immediately and make sure you are covered under some sort of warranty.

Default Tranny will not shift into 5th

I had the same thing. Put it in D and it only shifts into 4th. Dealer replaced the shift lever and connections swaying it was not making electrical contact to tell the transmission to shift. They said the parts were paid by Lexus, but charged me $300 labor. Probably I could have cleaned a contact, or re-soldered a joint if I tried myself. I was shifting the thing myself sometimes 'cause I really want to have more control of the transmission. Now I am just leaving it in D.
