thanks to everyone who responded. my mechanic, for his part, didn't even need to be asked - he said, "was there a tow charge?". I said yeah, $96, but I'm trying to see if AAA will reimburse for some (police insisted on emergency tow but said I'd get reimbursed with AAA). Guy handed me a $100 bill and apologized again. Freak occurrence, but still nice to know he's being honest and regretful about what happened. Still thinking of course that I should consider trying someone else.
