It has been done, but you have to modify the map/intake sensor located just past the air filter and or retrofit a new filter into the butterfly hole. Probably not worth doing, unless you plan on putting forced induction. I can't see much benefit of doing it, when the box is so far from the front of the car, unless you made a custom housing bigger than the original and larger piping drawing cold air from the front bar.

Cool

Eleventy billion threads in the ES forum alone about air intakes.
Summary: They fail in the Bang-for-the-Buck category. They make some noise. You stand to gain nothing at best or actually lose power at worst.

Search FTW.

Best thread in ES forum regarding air intakes, specifically for your 3VZ-FE engine:

Hey that's not bad, looks pretty neat. And you even put a metal piece onto the strut top to keep it from moving. You should replace the inlets with chrome manifolds :P

my 96 had a cold air intake by aem. actually i think its still in my garage. that + a flash flood killed the car. but hey it was worth the money and even though it wont read much hp or tq gains, you do reach RPM's much faster.

so go for it

here is what mine looked like
