Hi,
I'm hoping that someone else has had the same problem and can enlighten me on how to solve this. I tried to start my 2001 es300 yesterday-nothing. Some-not all-of the dash lights lit, but very dimly. The engine did not crank or make any noise. I had driven the car the day before with no problems. I checked the battery and noticed that the negative cable was corroded. I just had the battery changed 4 months ago, but they did not clean the cables! I also noticed that the security light for the alarm was remaining lit even with the key in the ignition. I was unable to put the car into neutral, but after messing with the corroded cable, all of the interior lights came on, I shifted into neutral, back into park and the car started right up. It subsequently restarted several times with no problem. When I tried the car a few hours later, I was back to square one. My husband cleaned the cable and tightened it and it would not start. He then tightened it a little more and it started. However, from everything that I have read, I wonder if I have a malfunction in the security system that is the main issue. I have inserted the key into both front door locks and turned them to the left and then the right. Does anyone have any insights? Thanks for your help!

Welcome to CL
I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like an electrical problem to me...perhaps a grounding problem. Since you said your battery is pretty new and your husband has already cleaned and tightened the (-)cable at the battery post, I would check the connection at the other end of the cable (where it connects to the frame of the car) If the cable is in bad shape I would replace it..its not that expensive.
Hope this helps
