Default 2002 ES300 Rear Main Seal

Just noticed a smell and had it checked at a local shop.
They said it looks like a rear main seal.
Are there any options other than pulling the trans?
Looks like a big hour job.

Ummm...no. i wish there was, but unfortunately the "Rear Main seal" is at the "Back" (trans side) of the engine. It seals the main (crank) and keeps it from leaking.

$800-$1200 fix depending where you are and whose doing it.

Nope, Trans must be removed to do the job. Book time calls for 11.7 hours.

hey get another shop's opinion.
secondly, a small leak is not a big deal, just watch the oil level and note increases in signs of leakage.

Some of the stop leak stuff might work - it causes the seal to swell up slightly.

The stuff I have used in my engine (I have never had such leaks at the seal), but others who have used it who have had success is the Lubro Moly (Liqui Moly in non-US markets) Motor Oil Saver, which is available at Napa Auto Parts,
http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/p...id/e_2501.html

Another one that is of note is the one from Bar's, http://www.barsproducts.com/1050.htm and that's available at a lot of auto parts stores, like AutoZone

they will leak if the oil isn't changed enough, or if the oil level is too high, or
wear and tear. alot of stressed out[how did you drive it] engine will leak too

barr's does work on a lot of cases, but only do it if you don't love the car enough to fix it properly
