I have searched these forums and read that the low pressure ac port is near the passenger side firewall but when I tried to recharge its obviously not it since the port is tiny in comparison to the one on the freon. Does anybody know if its an adapter needed for the job or is the low side somewhere else ? Sorry about the run on just egar to get this fixed since I have searched the engine bay for so long its making me sick to my stomach. (A pic would be awesome) Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You first need to figure out if the car had been converted to R134, or is it still using R12. Search the engine compartment for a sticker. If the car has been converted by a professional, they are required by law to place a sticker indicating that it has been converted. If it is original, I would recomend having a professional convert the system, the conversion is beyond the skills of most beginners.

The only sticker I found was about R12 so I'm guessing it hasn't been converted though the system was recharged by a pro a couple years ago.I bought the car from my dad and he had it done.could it be that they recharged the R12?

Yes, recycled R12 is still availiable to certified mechanics. Sometimes you can also find it on craigslist. Current regulators forbid auto part stores from selling R12 to the general public.
You could take a EPA 609 certification test online ( I believe it cost $20 when I took it). Which will enable you to legally buy R12. Or take it to a independant garage and have them top off the system.
If your system needs major work, ie compressor or evaporator replaced, I would reccomend converting to R134. It has a little less cooling capacity than R12, but it does a decent job down here in Texas.

at a shop or to do it yourself?
i retrofited my last car , and the cost is minimal if you have the tools and vacuum pump etc. but if not, everything from scratch, probably 300 bucks.
the port is different for R12 vs R134 , to prevent obvious mixups from happening. so, if you cant fit r134a stuff, that's cause its r12. Why are you even trying to add anything to it?
