1993 ES 5spd transmission questions...
So, I've been researching. I've been banging my head against the wall for some decent solid facts.
I know my car makes use of the E51 tranny, and I also know that it's a really close ratio transmission. Great for taking off, but, 4000 rpm at 78 mph is ridiculous. My Civic was geared taller than that. I know, I should live with it. And I also know the whole "bigger wheels" speech, blah blah blah.
I'm not going that route. The transmission on my car is pretty shot right now (I have to double clutch most of the time to avoid grinding the gears), so when I change it out, I'd like to know if there is a taller geared replacement because that's the only thing I really hate about my ES right now. I drive probably 90% freeway, so something in the 2000 rpm 70 mph gear ratio range would be great.
Also, on the route of autos, does anyone know if the A541E Avalon is geared the same (ratios and final drive) as the ES300's with this transmission? I ask because, my friend's Avalon does just what I am looking for above. 70 mph at a cozy 2000 rpms. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Mistype on my part, I meant E53. But still I am in 5th gear when it's at 4 grand right near 80. Even at 55 mph it's still running 2600 rpms about. The whole transmission seems like it's geared super short, even compared to 4 cylinder cars. I typically start my car in 2nd because 2nd only really takes me to 20 mph before it's passing 2500 rpms.
What do you other 5 spd owners run at on the freeway? Maybe I've got a really short final drive.... What other trans options do I have to drop the rpms?

Haha, I got an answer from your signature. I clicked on the Youtube link and began watching videos about the 5spd ES300. Seems like people in 5th gear are right around 3100 rpms at 82 or 83. I figured that something had to be wrong with my car or that the transmission wasn't stock. After examination it looks like mine's out of a Camry SE and that it's the 2nd transmission the car has been through. 0-60 times are slightly improved around 7.5 ish sec stock, but, I still want a better freeway car. I'll just get the stock E53 that this car takes when it comes time.

disregard :you're retarded, I mean, I'll delve back into this... but to call this caar short geared is like calling a mac truck a perfect candidate for auto cross its' the completely opposite , if you couldn't tell by my rage!
edit: I see what you just said.... you don't have stock parts... that explains it.... I am actually already aware of that rare transmission and was going to put that in if I didn't already decide that the turbo would be better with my current, stock gearing [the turbo that shall one day be installed]
dont worry about the RPM. that's nonsense. you're not familiar with RPM or fuel efficiency. youre not losing much fuel economy with that gearing. it might even be BETTER than mine. please, show a video of this car accelerating. I'm very curious from a real world perspetive what it's like to actually have the gearing the car should have had stock [to then REALLY have whooped the maxima at the time]
quick and VERY close guide:
for my stock car:
every gear is the MPH first digit at 2000 RPM
1st gear 10 mph 2000 RPM
2nd gear 20 mph 2000 RPM
3rd gear 30 mph 2000 RPM
4th gear 40 mph 2000 RPM
5th gear 50 mph about 2000 RPM [i think a few less]
It's just a coincidence, but makes for more laid back comfortable less shifty driving... but come on... when its a stick lexus, ...well... i guess i see their point... but come on.... the car is heavy.. .should ave been sporty gearing i do declare!
On the highway,
4th gear 125MPH 6500 RPM or 120MPH 6000 RPM
with gps laptop i found that my speedo is very good

I know what short gear ratios are. I have a Ford F100, and first takes me to 6 mph if I am lucky. Reverse, maybe 5.
But, aside from all of that, I was a little off on the engine speeds, but it's still definitely shorter than the stock ratios. It only annoys me because I just see the engine spinning unnecessarily, and if it's a torquey-ish V6, it'd be nice if it was spinning slower. Like I said, I drive 90-95% freeway. I am also used to a Grand AM where 80 mph is something like 2100 rpms because of GM's ridiculous overdrive. But that made for nice 33 mpg freeway drives all day long. I know it probably doesn't make that big of a difference, but knowing that my car doesn't need to spin that fast just bugs me.
Also, I'm sure it'll help my freeway mileage to drop the rpms. I had two civics, one of which had a super tall 5th gear, taking the engine down to 2000 rpms at about 62 mph. The other was a normal 5spd with the same 1.5 liter engine (non VTEC) and it spun around 3100 rpms at 65 mph. The first Civic would consistently break 50 mpg while the latter would be lucky to get 42, 45 tops. Since I drive all freeway most of the time, it was easy to spot the difference, which was usually 6 to 7 mpg.
I don't have a vid of the car accelerating yet, but here's what the shift points looked like
1st, 2000 rpm, 8 mph
2nd, 2000 rpm, 17 mph
3rd, 2000 rpm, 25 mph
4th, 2000 rpm, 37 mph
5th 2000 rpm 45 mph
These are rough estimates. Actually 5th gear at 80 mph isn't 4K, it's about 3,600. 65 is right on 3000 rpm, and 55 is at 2600.

but yeah your car has great track gearing.... dont complain man you hardly have to shift outta fifth on the highway! rofl also the engine will last longer with your gearing believe it or not
you also got slightly higher top speed i believe [have to load the automotive engineering software to check]

his car is much quicker than ours. I too want to see a video of it accelerating like mine and your brothers es 300 on a youtube clip.
I have seen in person and on youtube the late 90s camry se 5spd and they are quick.

I'll think I'll try getting a vid today.
I have more questions about the 5 spd transmission. How strong are these transmissions? Good for 350 crank hp?
I have no idea how to post it, so I'll just send it to someone if they are willing to post it.
