Unhappy p0402

96 es300-car check engine light turns on while driving then the car begins to slow-gas pedal useless-when you go to pull over and speed is way down the car kills. ok to drive in about 4 min. no check engine light.

take it to a shop.. i mean, how can i possibly help you ... i mean if you were able to fix this, you would have more knowledge than what you seem to have. you list the code... but seem to act like the code and your problem can't be related... take it to a shop unless you tell us why you think the emmisions device code you have CANT be related to your issue.... have you even looked at the egr system and tested functionality?

just being honest!!!!!!!!!!

P0402 is Excessive EGR Flow which explains your engine stall. You have an EGR valve sticking open or the EGR VSV is allowing constant vacuum to EGR. My bet is stuck open EGR valve

Thumbs down cleaned egr

hoses, check engine light flickered then turned off. Drove fine then as usual pulled in to the carport and turned the key off. Turned the key back on and put it in drive and it killed.- same old problem.

Unhappy I'm at a loss p402

ok so egr was cleaned and mechanic said it was working.
replaced temp sensor and VSV.

First thing I changed was the catalytic conv.

Still kills. when you press the gas it sputters and no accel. then kills. This happens driving too.

possibly egr pipe or egr passage in intake manifold clogged. sometimes, although it seems counter-intuitive or illogical, this code you got is set when there is insufficient egr flow.

what is the vacuum reading at idle? if you race the engine [to somewhere around 2500 RPM] what does it do? what is the vacuum reading at 2500 RPM? what does the vacuum reading tend to do when you raise the rpm to 2500 then quickly release? what does the vacuum reading tend to do at idle [once stabilized]?

was anything wrong with the catalytic converter that just got removed and replaced with a different one, if so what was wrong?

i'll have to check on your questions.

the mechanic that i originally took it to said there was a catalytic code that he got. we thought it had been fixed because it gave us no trouble for almost a month after the new converter was put in.

That is the check engine light that started it all.

Angry help

ok so i decided to change the egr valve anyway, so far

cleaned everything, changed everything and here is the situation.

the cars check engine light still is on. the car behaves the same---but---doesn't kill. Meaning, no speed in drive, some speed in reverse. however, i'm getting this bad backfire and sputtering.

not killing like before, but still its the same piece of junk. I've done everything that i can for p0402.

Hey, llcool - could you post what the vacuum readings are SUPPOSED to do, and around what suction he should be getting at idle and 2500 rpm? And is there a best place to do the vacuum readings?
