Pre-Buy Inspection...Do Most Use This Service?
I'm purchasing my first Lexus, a 2000 ES300 with 105K on it. The car is in fantastic condition. CarFax on it is very clean with only one (original) owner. The car is from out of state and I'm purchasing from a small local used car dealer. The service record section of the owners manual has been stamped for each service interval by a Lexus dealer in Kansas City (I live in Minnesota). While by no means a certified Lexus technician, I have a good understanding of cars an do a fair amount of work on my other vehicles. This site has been great for me to get schooled on Lexus issues and concerns. A few notes on the car:
1. Engine and transmission operate flawless. No visible leaks etc.
2. No signs of any bodywork or accident related issues.
3. It has the soft clunk sound that comes from strut mounts on the two front struts. This will be one of my first repairs.
4. Front brakes / rotors are new. The rears are getting towards the end with maybe 10k left on them.
5. Interior is spotless and everything works fine.
6. Timing belt was replaced by Lexus at 94k.
My question at this point is if I spend the money to get an inspection done, or just put that money towards struts. The selling dealer has given my 4 days to return the car if an inspection uncovers anything major (over $500). At this point I'm leaning towards no inspection and putting the money towards the struts. I consider struts as a normal maintenance item. We've driven the car a few days now, and are very satisfied with how it runs. Is using a pre-buy inspection considered a good thing by others on this forum?
Thanks!

I recommend getting a pre-buy inspection as well. Check AAA website, there are auto shops out there that do the AAA used vehicle inspection program. It is quite throughout as it takes about 1.5 hours to complete (quoted by 3 shops). In SoCal, it costs about $100.
Clean CarFax is one thing, but visual inspections is definitely better. Since u know your stuff, pre-buy inspection is the 2nd opinion to ensure your peace of mind.
