No, it would be an instant reading. Where did you get the new knock sensors? What brand? Are you sure you hooked the wires back up?

How did you end up testing it?

You replaced both of them?

Make sure its off. I bought new harness for the knock sensors new from Toyota for $25. Save me some headaches when I was doing valve covers, intake manifold gaskets, NGK plugs and wires, and used pair of knock sensors from a 86k mile Camry 3VZ engine. No DTC's came back.

are the knock sensors a known, high frequency failure item on higher mileage 3vz-fe? or what is the brief synopsis on them for the 3vz-fe / other es 300 engines? I am getting the feeling it's common problem ...

ive seen many 1mz/3vz engines with knock sensor issues...theyre way too sensitive and can cause the timing to retard/check engine light to come on
did you check the wiring? ive seen the wires fray and break on some 92-93 3VZ camrys...

wires looked ok to me but I feel I should replaced them but I have little experience with cars and overlooked that, too late I realized my mistake..good thing is that next time I know exactly what to do and the job will take me 4 hours the most...first time took me about 5 hours to removed the intake and another 5 to put it together (but I installed valve cover gaskets new intake gaskets and new plugs too)

yeah 2 hrs is the normal time to remove the upper intake, so you must have been taking your time, which is a good thing when you're doing it your first time.

some people pull the thing off within 30 minutes, which scares me how fast

Especially on older cars - the rubber hoses and plastic parts crystalize and are ripe for breaking.

aja! had to replace/cut a few hoses that cracked when I was pulling them out/in
not a big deal but had to be really careful not only with the hoses but any plastic/wire/rubber thing on the car..ws so afraid to break one of those hard to find or expensive shaped hoses or even worse a sensor..but had a good experience doing that and I'm more confident for the very soon next time when I finally install new ks and wires.. thanks to all for the advises and suggestions, without you never would have done it

I speak english a little not much but I know how to read it very well..and I have not fixed the car yet I was just quotering mike and was thanking all of you for your support to encorauge me to do the job tearing apart the intake when I never did it before (saved about $900 bucks doing it myself even tough it did not work)

called my local lexus dealer (coliseum oakland ca) and each sensor is $192 a piece and each wire is $56.82...something around $546 tax included...

that's a lot of money for me..I'm positive the sensors that installed are fine I tested them before...wires are the problem...when I moved the wires form outside sometimes the cel goes off and then when I drive the car a few miles and a couple bumps cel is on again...

I think since I do not have to much money and won't soon...I'm just going to open it again and install new wires and still I will have to spend about $125
its' a try I think I'm going to have to do... will buy the wires tomorrow and if have time at least I will open it in the evening to finish saturday noon or evening and I will keep my fingers crossed that this time it will work
