yeah stop what you're doing or you shall break it
there are two metal parts that have to be raised up, then tuged on to pull out the center vent assembly. they can be seen, just look, maybe with a flashlight. about midway into the vent itself, sortof, maybe an inch or so from the vent fins, along the bottom.
long need nose pliers on each one at the same time is one of the few best methods.
it's a ***** to do and that's just life .... you will see what i mean.... you may have to use a flat head screwdriver to get the metal things slightly raised up to even allow the needle nose pliers into it.
btw, it's a ***** to do, if I didn't mention that already.
what ever you do, do not pull or pry on anything plastic.. if you are... you are doing it/something wrong. massive tip right there, believe me.
btw, I dont know if I mentioned this already, but it's a real pain in the a$$ to do.

I had no issue removing my center vent - two small screwdrivers on each side taped up to avoid scratching. The metal clips are on the top and bottom, and did not give me any grief. What year is your car?

it's a 93.
I can't fit a screwdriver blade under the clip at all. All the pliers I have are too big. This is incredibly hard to do with two hands. Can't see or fit anything there. I've tried a couple knives and about 5 different screwdrivers.

mmatheny, don't confuse the issue , you have a 2001 and I dont think that is nearly as hard
12340987, you have your work cut out for you. it's just hard. i forgot to mention something earlier, i love how you called this thread register 3, just like the FSM calls the vent. i mean seriously... what a weird error of translation...
also, here's what I recommend, and there's not much else I can tell you on here without physically showing you: those two little metal thing popup, that's easy to do. just use a flat-head screw driver of the approprate width and length, and on each one. then , with plyers and those metal things "set", pull it out. if things are just right, it shall come out properly. I can't word it much more man, you gotta understand... I'm trying my best... it's just annoying to pull it out. even I, and I've done a freggin' head gasket on this car, shy away from pulling it out so that I can ground my radio so that I dont hear alternator whine.... i would rather stare at the wrong color, replacement I got at junkyard, of a vent, and hear alt whine through my radio, then have to deal with it again.... it's really an ordeal... and the sweat poors down my forehead.... and the anger builds up... and the cramped space that my arms goes flying through when the plyers lose their grip.... all not fun ... but godspeed, may you be the prince they speak of in the lexus fables who pulls the sword from the stone.. err... the "register 3" from the dash

So update:
Mine had no metal tabs anywhere. There were two imperceptible black plastic tabs on the TOP. I broke it in four places before it finally popped out after I just wore down the tabs in anger, frustration, and desire for music while I drive. That is amazingly frustrating that one person has 4 metal tangs, llcoolpass has 2 metal tangs and I have none, and llcoolpass has the same year as I do.

I had a heck of a problem trying to get my center vent out too. I spent close to two hours tugging on it and it WOULD NOT budge! Solution: Call Lexus dealership and ask them to remove it...best idea I ever had! They tugged and pulled on it too and eventually broke it trying to get it out. So, they apologized for the damage they caused and ordered me a brand new one, no charge. And no charge for the labor to take it out or to put in the new one. Bottom-line: the whole episode didn't cost me a dime!
Also, when they put in the new one, I asked them to not use the clips in case I needed to remove the vent again in the future. So, that's what they did and even without the clips, it's in the dash nice and snug.

i like the idea of removing the clips
but, they are there from the factory on 1993 model. i know because i even replaced my black with a beige from a car in the junkyard [auto trans model btw] and it had the same design.
do you have picture of this that you wouldn't mind uploading for us to see?
