I found a frayed wire that plugs into this thingie:

What is this thingie? It's just underneath the plastic engine cover.
Thingie.

It's funny you're not the only one who finds frayed wires down in that area, on this forum. I can't help but wonder if little critters are doing it. It's happened before to people on car forums.

but yeah, asg14 is right, VSV , vacuum solenoid valve. That one in particular drives the idle air control valve [IACV]. So, it's full , shortened [haha] name is IACV VSV. they both are part of the emissions subsystem.

none of my wires were frayed like that when I recently had it all taken apart. but, good news is, unless whatever did that bites you, it's easy enough to fix that wire , if you got some skill with soldering properly.

the other VSV [i think its greenish], to the right, controls fuel pressure.

careful with them, the little oval-cylinder-like protuberance [to be clear, not the vacuum line plugs] can break off if you put force on it carelessly [dont ask how I know hehe]

I'm guessing it rubs against the cover. I notice that other bundle of wires looks worn too. Is that the injector?

Where does the wire lead to? It would be nice if I could take it out to fix it.

what wire are you talking about now?

anyway, you should be able to fix the wire or find someone to do it, liek a master tech somewhere.

Mice, it's much more common them people think. One chewed a spark plug wire on my dad's Camry. My dealer has had cars come in needing an entire engine harness because of animals crewing them up. It's crappy.

what would be great is a sticky post with giant pictures of these engines with everything labeled. Sure would cut down on a lot of "what is this thingie..." "where is the..." posts. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Also what is that connector thingie in the center with the two terminals jumped?

my picture is quite helpful, it's high res and you can use logical and your eyes to see where the vacuum lines go. i certainly used it

this picture you posted just now is a nice idea but is very impossible to read the tiny words and doesn't do too much with vacuum lines but hey

Ah, I didn't see that you had replied to him. Yeah, should have been PNG. You should take it upon yourself to take a big photo and label everything and make a mod post it as a sticky. I would do it but I'm still not sure what everything is.
