Default So, I put in an intake.....

After installing it last night, I took it for a ride and all seemed well at first. Then while accelerating, I was like WTF? My car sounds like a diesel. I have no idea why it sounds like this. I figured that since it is an open filter, everything gets louder. It sounds like its coming from the engine area but its hard to diagnose since it only happens under acceleration. Can it be an exhaust leak or possibly a catalytic converter? BTW, this is a 2000 ES, no CEL, everything else is peachy. Thanks for any suggestions guys.

I am no expert, but i know for a fact certain VW [MK4] Jetta's/GTI's have a similar issue. If you put on a certain intake it will blow your MAF. Perhaps this is an early sign of that?

If it sounds like a diesel than something is up for sure! In no way should it sound close to a diesel! It should be substantially 'louder' since it resonates more, thus making the more aggressive sound. Not 'clack clack clack...'

One more thing i can think of is, did you go through a puddle? Is it damp/wet raining when you put it in? Since it could have gotten wet/potentially sucked in some water

Michal

It was dry, no rain. Funny thing is, it sounded like it was under the car. I'll take it to a muffler shop, have them lift it and see if maybe there is a leak or who knows.
BTW, I had an intake on my MK4 1.8T with a diverter valve, I can only wish a Lexus would sound that nice with an intake......oh wait, we don't have turbos

What kind of intake did you put on exactly?

May just be a weird coincidence. My flex pipe is JUST starting to go bad, and has a similiar sound (and I also have a 1 off custom made intake). I'd check out the flex pipe.

Oh and can you tell me what kind of intake you put on?

The way it looks to me on the 2001 [VVTI motor] is that the MAF is 'molded & built into' the airbox...

If so, how did you 'bypass' it? Link me/PM me.. whatever

Not sure on that engine in perticular unfortunatley. I used Spectre intake piping which comes in different lengths and bends. Have a pic of your perticular MAF? Spectre has an adapter for some of the newer ones.
