Default 1991 ES 250 no brake lights

I'm fixing up a nice used 1991 ES250 for my son to drive and want to troubleshoot a no brake light situation and also trunk hinges that are worn and noisy.

The brake light fuse is good as are the brake light bulbs. The brake light switch does send power when it is activated but you can hear a clicking noise when the ignition is on and you release the brake light switch. The clicking is coming from under the shifter area. Any ideas???

also want to see what things one should watch for with this model for common issues and fixes.

Thanks, Jim

Do you have the brake warning light on the dashboard?

The clicking from under the shifter area is the mechanism activating to allow the shifter to be taken out of park. You can not shift out of park unless the brake is pressed.

I don't have any brake warning lights on the dash now. Are there any relays up front that involve the brake lights? The brake switch seems to work right, I can get power through it when it is extended as if the brake pedal is pushed but no lights at the rear?

maybe a bad connection near the trunk area?

we traced the brake light power back to the orange lamp failure box in the right side of the trunk. There is power going back to this box when the brake pedal is depressed but nothing comes out of it.

Do these boxes go bad by chance?

The light failure sensor usually causes a warning light on the dash if it goes or if it detects a blown bulb or short, but if it goes bad internally, maybe. Try your local junkyard or ebay for a replacement. They're not expensive. Also, check the wiring to the taillights where it is attached to the trunklid support. There's a lot of movement of wires there when opening/closing the trunk.

If you don't have a wiring diagram, go to the Camry forums and download the Gen. 2 shop manual. While there are a few differences, it will get you started. Good luck.
