Default Why Dealers suck. A brief rant.

I needed to adjust the sunroof height on my 96 ES. The shop manual shows what looks like a specialized long double slotted shim for the rear adjustment, so I went to Hudson Toyota in Jersey City.
These helpful gents first told me that Toyo and Lexus are two different manufacturers and parts don't interchange, and when I asked one to look up the item anyway and pull up the schematic, the other expert said to not waste their time, since the shims are 'part of the track assembly.'
I came home, pulled the side trim off the sunroof and...Hey! Just plain old slotted steel shims w a small tab. The kind that grow on trees and are sold at any good automotive or hardware store.
So, thanks to the helpful men at Hudson Toyota. I'm certain your expertise and helpfulness wound up saving me some money. And you've also saved me from making any trips to your dealership in the future.
But I'm disappointed, because I really did expect a bit better.

Just to note, I'm pretty sure the 92-96 ES300 and Camry actually use the SAME sunroof. I know the control switch with map light is the same between the 2.

It;s hard to find a good dealer. I got luckey and got one of the best Toyota Parts guys in the US.

Toyota and Lexus won't work on each-others vehicles, it's just their code of practice.

Of course it's the same sunroof.

Yeah, BadViper, all's well that ends well? Sure. I guess I hallucinated that someone working in a service industry job might actually be helpful. And at a car dealership, no less.

I bought a few items for my old Rx300, at a Toyota dealer b4 w/o any problems. Guess I am lucky.

Here in Va, I take my cars to the Toyota dealer all the time. Never had a problem and about 30% cheaper in labor costs.

Same here. I've taken my ES to a Toyota dealership for the last four years for all service work. It works nicely both ways - I get a break on the cost of parts and labor, and their technicians get to work on a sexy, classy Lexus now and then amidst their usual workday filled with Corollas and Yarises
