I was wondering if anyone had changed their timing belt to see how difficult it would be to do a diy. If you think it's better to have a shop do it, would it be very pricey to have it done on these cars? Thanks in advance.

If you have ever done a timing belt change, you would know what you are doing. If not, then leave it to the pros. It's not simple as an accessory drive belt change.

O.k. So I guess I'll call around some shops to see what labor would be on these cars. So probably every 60k would be a good idea right? When that time comes, would you recommend changing the water pump and thermostat too, or do those last a while?

I spent about $750-ish on water pump and all those stuff. i did mine when my 03 ES was 87K. and yes, let the pros handle it, it's not an easy job, at least from what I see.

as a technician i can say leave it to the pros...it is not a DIY job unless you have some more serious mechanical experience beyond changing oil and brake pads.

I had mine done at the Toyota dealer last year. $800.00 for the timing belt, accessory drive belts, water pump, main oil seal, cam seal, and thermostat. I was going to change the belt tensioner too, but the dealer said it was still good. It's cheaper to bundle as many preventive maintenance services as you can at once.

Did it on my 01 ES last week. $750 for a completed package:
- Timing belt.
- All accessory belts.
- 2x timing belt idler.
- Belt tensioner.
- Water pump.
- 3 seals (forgot what the name?).

All OEM, not aftermarket. As gulffishin said, change as many items out as possible. It is the labor cost that will hurt you later if 1 item fail.

Good for another 90k mi. Hopefully by that time, I will be able to get a "new to me" ES350.

its true...bundling services together saves money.
750-800 is a great price for getting all the major service work done.
