I am also in the same boat and thinking of doing for my Lexus 2002 )bought in Oct 2001) ES 300.
If you are doing ATF drain the pan-&-refill, how many times do you think one should do drain the pan-&-refill to get a clean looking ATF and at what interval ?
I was told by the master mechanic in an indie shop near my house that I will need 4 Quarts of AMS ATF each time and must do atleast 3 times - every month for 3 month. If the color is NOT satisfactory or clean looking after third attempt then he suggested to do for the 4th time. He said that unless we do at a short interval it is of no use. Is he reasonably correct?
Also, is AMS ATF a better option as far as synthetic ATF is concerned or would you like to suggest some other alternatives?

Amsoil ATF is quite good (arguably the best) and have used it before, however people who know me know I like to experiment. The one I used the last time was Redline D4. Both Amsoil and Redline D4 are Type-IV compatible. Royal Purple Max ATF is also very good. I know quite a few people with 1MZFE engines that have used these.
