2000 ES300 - changing struts - back seat
Do I need to remove the back seat to change the rear struts/strut mounts? If so how do I do it? I don't see anything about it in my Chilton's manual.
Thanks,
Martin

well, i just did this job yesterday. all four corners. not too hard and only takes an hour or two if you have the right tools. a few tips:
unbolt all that looks in the way - it's really just a few bolts that are holding the strut onto the car
use an impact wrench for the tough stuff if you have access - it makes the job sooooooooo much easier
i used vise grip pliers to remove the sway bar link from the strut. the place where the allen key was a little stripped and worn, but the vise technique worked fine
have an assistant! it's awkward guiding the strut up the fender well and you need someone at the top to screw the mounting bolts in
if you are installing springs (especially lowering springs) on your new struts make sure you line everything up (seat, spring, insulator, mount, etc.) and use bump stops! i cut mine but they do the trick. be careful with the spring compressor - improper use can be fatal
check out this thread - it's a coilover install worklog, but struts work exactly the same without any adjustment needed.

it's the only 'special' tool that you need. but an impact wrench makes taking of the top nut a lot easier also. i had to use vise grip pliers on the strut also because it turned while i was trying to take off the top nut. might not make sense now but when you work on the struts it will.

You don't have to have one.....but it will make it a LOT easier... I've done them with a jack before........but I have also had them come off the jack and bounce down and take out stuff across the shop.

You can do it without one if you prefer, but I would NOT recommend it. Like I said, it will take something out if it gets away from you.
Somewhere, @ sometime , someone invented the spring compressor when they got tired of stuff in their shop getting tore up from run-away springs.
