Ok, time to change the timing belt on the wife's 330. I'm guessing idler pulley needs to be changed at the same time. What else needs to be done while they're in there?
Her airbag light is also on. Need to have them look at that.
Also, anyone know of a good indie in the North NJ area?
Thanks.

Thanks. One question though--people have told me to change my water pump on a BMW as preventative maintenance as well. I never understood this as I've not really heard of water pumps going. On older BMWs this did happen, however, because they made the impellers out of plastic and, when they went, it was ugly (as you can imagine). The only thing is, a water pump on a BMW (6 cylinder) is very easy to change. Not like most cars where you tear half the engine apart. I just wonder how (un)reliable the water pump is on a Lexus. I realize they're already in there and the part is cheap (so I'll probably do it), my question is just out of curiosity.
Any idea on what this should cost at an indie? Dealer wants about $650 although not sure if they're swapping the water pump and a few of the other things.
Also still wondering if there's anyone in the NJ area who can suggest a good indie mechanic to do this. I can't imagine it should be terrible hard (for a non-dealer) since it's so similar to a Camry and they're around a bit. Just don't want to pay a dealer extra for the loaner car and free car wash if ya know what I mean...

On our engine, to get to the water pump, you'll have to remove the Timing Belt. So same thing for our engines, it;s preventative maintmence. I have seen them go bad too. Not common, but it happenes. So it can prevent a lot of big headaches in the future.
$650 at the dealer may just be the timing belt and nothing else. I know that will not include the seals for that price. It would likely cost $650 or about for everything at an independant shop. Where in NJ are you anyway? I'm in Stamford CT and can do it. there is another member in NJ that I think can do it as well for good price.

Make sure that whoever does the work, puts a sticker in a visible part of the engine bay, indicating the date, milage, and that the timing belt (Water Pump etc) were changed.
This will be of great help to the next owner, and a big advantage to you when you ever sell the car.

Yes, I was a bit surprised about it being a belt, too. I had thought they went away from belts...for obvious reasons...
Nobody knows of an indie in NJ?

I'm in North Jersey near NYC so not that far from Stamford.

Been asking around with people in the area but I'm not comfortable without knowing they work on Lexuses (Lexi?) regularly. I realize it's not rocket science and it's similar to a Camry and all....
