Default New member. Replaced alternator, now tail light fuse blown

I had the alternator replaced on my '99 ES300 about a month ago (it was covered by Carmax warranty); my tail lights went out two days ago and I'm advised I need the replace a fuse. Could the new alternator cause a problem with lights, several weeks after the fact? Carmax is an hour away...should I just check on replacing a fuse, or take the car back to them? Thanks very much!

Fuses are cheap enough, make sure you replace with the proper size fuse. Several weeks after the fact points to a coincidence, if the fuse blows again you should then start looking for a problem.

Thanks for responding, George. I replaced the fuse today, still no lights. How likely is it that both bulbs would burn out at the same time? and if it's not the bulbs, what else could cause it?

Do the rear side marker, or license plate lights come on? There are actually 4 tail light bulbs, so the probability of all 4 burning out at the same time is slim, but not impossible. It would not hurt to check the bulb, and if you have a DVM, check for power at the bulb. I looked at the circuit, power for the lights leaves the fuse. From there is goes to the rear side marker and license plate lights, and to the module that detects a burned out tail light.

This module measures the current going to the 4 rear tail lights. If you have a DVM it should be fairly easy to talk you thru step by step, where to check next.

I don't know what a dvm is, can you recommend a particular brand?

DVM, digital volt meter, radio shack and harbor freight both sell meters for under $20 which are good enough for most automotive aps. Send me a pm with your email send some info that can help you.
