You need to replace the mirror. The mirror uses an LCD type auto-darkening lens that has broken.

Install takes about 10 minutes. The mirror is about $475 from the dealer....

I suggest calling www.Billystoyotaparts.com I have bought from them before, and they have reasonable prices.

Likely cause is that the silver plating at the back of the mirror became delaminated. As to what caused it I don't know.

Maybe a Mirror repair shop can clean and re-apply the silver plating, I doubt it however as its a heated mirror, but take your picture to a mirror repair shop and ask them.

Worth a try.

I have a 1997 es 300 which has power/heated side-view mirrors but it doesn't have the automatic dimming mirror like the one above. If i were to get one will it fit and is it plug and play or it needs modifications? thanks and don't mean to steal the topic.

phil mentioned a "mirror repair shop"...where do you find a mirror repair shop? I spoke to several mechanics and none of them in my area want to attempt to fix the glass. i'm not spending $500 on a 12 year old car for just the mirror housing & glass, or just the glass itself ($475). On the E-class i used to own, one could remove the glass & just take out the silver backing, put the mirror glass back in, and you're all set (but with no heating or dimming functionality, which I'm fine with). anyone attempt this on an ES?

By mirror repair shop, I meant a store or shop that specializes in glass and mirrors. Such shops typically cut and install mirrors for household and commercial use. I did not mean a mechanic.

There should be plenty such shops in your area. Just look up "Glass and Mirror installation and Repair", in your local phone book.

I suppose that other cheap alternatives would be to find one at a scrap yard or EBay, or have a mirror cut to the same size and than glue it on top of the defective one.

At least the remote function will still work.

thank you! just needed the add'l clarification.

has anyone attempted to remove the LCD backing on the mirror glass, then put the glass back in? it works on Benzes, apparently, but of course you sacrifice the heating & dimming features (which would be fine by me). will also check out glass shops.
