Select premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating of 91 or higher for optimum engine performance. However, if such premium type cannot be obtained, you may temporarily use unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating as low as 87.

Premium fuel's better for higher compression ratio engines. The same engine can increase timing to increase power [ on certain areas of the powerband ] when higher octane gas is used.
Of course, all the Toyota engines in the Camry V6/ES 300 feature knock sensors.
When they detect a knock, they pull back on the timing.
It's not a real decrease unless you're an absolute stickler for performance... Some will notice, others will claim, for most it's a mental thing.
The most notable difference is between 87 octane and that 108 octane racing gas that burns your nose off your face to sniff.

'05 Manual sez (pretty much) "87-octane or higher". No other qualifications.
Just bought ours, and will highway test for mpg difference. Doubt there'll be one for around town.

Regular or premium fuel?
Does the 93 es300 take premium or regular?
in the owner's manual it says it can take regular but premium is recommended.
So i try to put in some regular the other day. and fired up the car the next morning and it pings and knocks so bad u can feel it.
so i think i will put premium in from now on. but daym....it cost me 30$ to fill a little more than half a tank for premium!!!!

You should run 87 for maximum power. 3vz-fe's are insanely far from needing premium because of the weak tuning did on the engine to keep it from competiging with 7m-ge's, 1jz-ge's, and 2jz-ge's of the time. Run that tank out (It's an 18.5 gallon tank. You should be able to get over 375miles on it with a few gallons left if you're not driving it hard & it's in good condition to get good mpg.).
Reset the ECU (Pull the EFI fuse a second & replace it), & run 87 from now on.
There are a lot of threads discussing it but the short is:
* A 3vz-fe has no use for more than 87.
* A 3vz-fe doesn't have sensative knock sensors & doesn't benifit from it
* The more octane, the more pollution, the worse performance, the worse mileage

You have a 1mz-fe. It will run on 87, but will most likely ping. Wouldn't hurt anything in the foreseeable future like that, but over the years it will eventually ping itself to death.
If you wanna run 87, or 89, reset your ECU right after you fill up.
1mz-fe's are bad to have over-sensative knock sensors which pull timing even when they shouldn't.
They really need to run higher octane, but it's not going to kill you, or the engine to not run big grade.
