Hello,
I feel like I am wandering through unfamiliar territory, but I am curious how difficult/manageable is a water pump + timing belt replacement on a 70k mile 2005 ES 330?
my father drives one and he has asked me to do the job for him, but I'm not familiar with lexus, my background is with MB. used to drive a toyota, but that was years ago.
do I need any specific special tools to do the job?
what else should be done "while im at it"?
also if anyone has a pointer to where I can find instructions on this task, that would be helpful. or I can go buy a chiltons/haynes manual or something. any recommendations?

Why 70K miles? The lexus manual says at 90K miles or 9 years.
Right now, I am at 85K and considnering to put it off to 120K miles. Not to save money, but I want to know the limit. Many years ago, I used to put off Tercel to 9 years with 170K miles. It was still running well, but I gave up. Called the junk yard and towed a way.
But remember, I do my own maintenance. Air filter, cabin filter and detail twice a year, every Spring and Fall. Oil and oil filters every 3 months regarless of miles. Car wash as soon as I see salt and dirt. Rotate tire only when I changed from Winter to Summer tires.
To your question, you could search and download the repaire manual somewhere in this forum. I have Haynes manual, but it is not very helpful.

Everything is straightforward provided you know what you are doing. There is a step by step guide in the FSM. The two things you will definitely have problems with is removing the crankshaft bolt and removing the camshaft bolts. The crankshaft bolt isn't too bad (just need a breaker bar to put against the ground and jump the car) but getting the camshaft bolts off are a nightmare if you don't have the right tools.
If you're going to do the timing belt/water pump, you might as well replace everything in there - 2 pulleys, crankshaft seal, camshaft seals, and tensioner. This will definitely save you time later because you have to take all that out to get to the water pump anyways. good luck.

good info here, I have a 04 es, 75000 miles, dealer told my I should have it replaced, of course he wants to have it replaced, money for him and the dealer. I'll wait. I can do minor maintenance, I won't try the timing belt, don't have the tools.
