Some idiot mechanic or PO turned one of the distributor cap bolts in so hard that it's sheared off, and 3 of the ears on the cap are cracked or broken. I have a new cap and rotor in hand. However, even with the 3 other bolts turned in all the way, the cap feels loose.
In the service manual, they show a large o-ring about the diameter of the cap, fitting around the circumference of the cap and onto the distributor body. There is another o-ring in the distributor base that seals oil from inside the engine from leaking into the distributor, about 1 1/2" diameter.
Is there supposed to be a large o-ring around the outer rim of the cap? I was thinking that the small gap might be there to accomodate it, and the bolts cannot tighten down unless it's in there.

Yes. There should be a rubber seal.

Thanks for the reply. There's no Lexus dealer here, so after looking on-line with no results, I went to the Toyota dealer and have 1 on order - $11.50! Oh well, it should be mounted right. The parts guy was surprised it ran with the loose cap and missing seal.
