Default 01 console gear selector light bulb

Hey guys I have a 01 es300 coach edition. My light burnt out that lights up what gear that your in on the center console. I looked on a website and saw that it took a size 74 bulb so I ordered up a white LED one. I put the bulb in and it lights up but it is so loose in the socket that it will come unconnected from the socket and turn off from normal road vibration and bumps... Anyone know why the bulb that I got for this is so loose? Also I went to local auto store and they looked up the bulb I needed in the computer and I purchased one since there cheap to see if that one would work and it will light up but is still really loose and falls out of socket. Can anyone tell me what might be going on?

Thanks.

Your 01 ES uses the same bulb type (Toyota part number 90981-11018) that our Camry uses. I replaced the gear selector bulb in the Camry a few months ago (after it was out for a number of years) and the replacement bulb fit securely.

If the bulb is loose, either the bulb isn't secured firmly in the socket, the bulb is the wrong one or the socket is damaged. The socket and the wire it is attached to is available as a replacement part. The part number I see in the parts list for the socket and attached wire is 35906-33050 but verify it if you need it.

Thanks for the response Jim. Another question I have, do I just plug it in and push down on bulb or is it a twist style socket? I haven't tried to twist it but since you replaced yours and its securely installed I figured I would ask.

I just recently replaced my shifter bulb as well. Used a #74 LED and it fit right in, nice and tight. I did have to push a little bit to get it to stay in the socket, but it fit fine and works great.

I posted this up a while ago but I just wanted to confirm that #74 bulb with a little jiggling around was a secure and perfect fit. Thanks

If you buy the correct bulb (I don't know if a #74 bulb is equivalent to the Toyota/Lexus part number) - it will be obvious how the bulb fits in the socket ... i.e. whether the bulb base has threads and twists in or that the bulb has a wedge type base and you simply push it in. The photos of #74 bulbs on the Internet show it has a wedge base.

When I replaced the gear select bulb in our Camry, I removed the old burned out bulb and took it to the nearest auto parts store to get a matching replacement. I don't remember the bulb base type. The bulb location and the part number are shown in the attached diagram.
