Default Transmission Indication Question 2002 ES300

Just noticed today that the instrument panel transmission indicator shows "4" instead of "D", despite the shifter being in "D". Although I didn't have time to see if the car would go into overdrive at highway speed, I'm assuming it won't if the indicator is saying "4". Tried several times to get it to say "D" but no luck. Any ideas on what to check, or what is going on? I have owned the car for years, and have not seen this before.

Sounds like an issue in the shift selector range switch.

The range switch is located on the transmission where the shift cable bolts to it. It has a connector going to it. Make sure it isnt loose. You may need to adjust the shifter cable, or replace the switch.
