Default High Cold Idle 96ES

1MZFE, 116K. The car has always (since I got it a year ago w 96K on odo.) run up to 1600-1700 rpm from a cold start, then drops to 700-750 rpm when warmed up completely. Obviously, in the winter this takes a while. TB kit recently done with no change. Otherwise, she runs smooth, quiet and strong, no codes or CEL. Any suggestions as to where to start? And thanks!

Normal. The quicker the engine warms up, the lower the emmissions will be and the better the fuel economy will be. Not to mentioned hot air at the vents sooner as well. Clean your IAC anyhow if you haven't done so and drive it.

Wow. Never had a car -including camry-that cold idles this high. I could see 1200-1300 rpm, but 1750 seems wrong. Is that the actual spec for cold idle?

Not sure about what the actual spec is, but my 97 ES300 cold idles @ 1700ish or so and slowly idles down. I would say it's normal.

Mine has never gone above 1250 rpm on a cold start. But then again, I live in south Texas.

From a cold start here in NY it about 1600 rpm. Sometimes even higher in the winter. So that seems about right.

Default Thanks, all.

One less thing to worry about.

Sorry, Texas...gotta go with the northerners on this one.

One thing I noticed on mine is that when I start the car in the morning it obviously idles higher just as its supposed to, but I back out of the garage then when I get on the street and put it in drive I get a more than normal jolt going into drive. Sometimes it really jolts you enough to where your head moves lol. Obviously any other time you do this its perfectly smooth. Anyone elses car do this?
