Default Axle Question

So I took my 94 es300 in to have the starter replaced. They end up telling my that I need to have my axle replaced. It had a crack in it. They want 512.00 to do the job!

How dangerous is it to drive a car with a cracked axle?

How easy is it to replace if I were to do it myself?

There probably talking about the axle boot. I would go check your axles yourself and look for a tear in the boot. sometimes you can just install a new boot if its not to bad, but it's probably easier to replace the whole axle. If you didn't replace the starter yourself your probably not gonna want to replace the axle yourself.

I could have replaced the starter myself. I just didn't have the time to do it this past weekend.

Where exactly should I be looking?

Look at the boot for the axle:

If you drive too long with this condition, then eventually your axles will start 'clicking' as you're turning your car.

If it's not making noises now, then just have the boot replaced and repacked with grease. If the metal part of the axle is actually 'cracked' then your car would probably be undriveable by now. Rarely does this occur under normal driving.

If it's bad enough you'll see grease all over the backside of your wheels and suspension components.

It doesn't take $500 to do an axle job. Call around, it's really cheaper than that. One axle is about $75+ though.
