Learned the other day that my car needs a new head gasket....for the second time. The first one was replaced when it had only about ~45K miles. Now it has 73K. This is ridiculous. The car also needs a new a/c system, which is why it has been sitting in the garage all summer.

-middle of gas needle blinking.
-left side of a/c display dark.
-had to change some valve for my a/c.
-cigarette lighter thing pulls out (the metal sleeve).
-i caught my driver side seatbelt in the door, now it dosen't stay up when retracted (top part of clasp broke off)
-"door lock" paint fading
-side of front seats that faces the doors are squashed down.
-i think thats it.
there seems to be a few people that changed thier engine mounts and gaskets.
how do you know when to change them?

zeta: my needles aren't replaced yet. dunno if i ever will.
j2tha0e: you replace your engine mounts when they are no longer doing their job properly (obviously) and they actually begin to do more harm than good. bad engine mounts dont properly hold the engine, thus, when you drive around, the engine moves around, and one of the more obvious signs is a broken air hose. your air hose tries to move around with the swaying engine but it will eventually break because there is only so much that the hose can move without it breaking.
the gaskets are easier to know when to replace....you usually have leaky oil and spots on your garage/driveway. or you either have smoke coming from your exhaust if its that bad.

Mine has needed:
motor mount,
valve cover gaskets,
halfshaft (CV boot tears, dirt gets into CV joint, eventually it goes; if you start hearing a clicking or clunking noise when your turning, get this fixed right away!)
rear brake pads (fronts were done not too long before I got it)
I think the struts were worn fairly badly, they're replaced now anyway
I've got a few of the little things like a slightly dim spot on my speedometer and display problems w/climate control, thankfully all my needles still work. My steering wheel leather is getting bad, makes me want to get in on the wood wheel deal; but the rest of my leather is in great shape for a '92.
Oh yeah, my heater doesn't work quite as well as it should. When it's real cold, like below 20 degrees, the heater just doesn't get as hot as it should; I won't be driving the ES next winter so I'm not gonna worry about this one.
My cigarette lighter didn't work for a while either, it wouldn't stay in to get hot; I just pushed in the tabs that hold it in when pushed down, works great now.
I've been impressed by how solid the car feels, none of the little rattles and buzzes typical of many cars, especially older cars.

minor stuff
Bought my '96 2 months ago at a good used car lot in Alamogordo, NM. It had 64k miles and is almost like new. Still, there have been some problems, though minor.
1. Left door speaker is blown. The Lexus dealer in El Paso wants 185.68 for the speaker and 60-80 to install it! I am gonna do it, cuz I want to keep my car absolutely original.
2. I think the rear window defogger is dead, probably due to clumsy window tint removal (not by me). It might just be a fuse, but I can't FIND the damn fuse! It's definitely not where the owner's manual says it should be.
3. One of the bulbs in my high-mount brake light goes out intermittently. Hopefully, it's just a weird bulb.
I gave Hoy-Fox Lexus in El Paso my VIN and they told me some of the car's maintenance history, which is pretty cool:
1. The power antenna has been replaced.
2. They did some work on the window regulators, probably to deal with wind noise. There is still some wind noise coming through the right front window on breezy days.
So...pretty minor problems, and it seems like a wonderfully solid car, and I love it. On the other hand, I had an '89 Honda CRX Si for almost 9 years and 160,000 miles and never had ANY problems at all! Just routine scheduled maintenance.

(I've only owned it 1 year)
*Leather peeling off the steering wheel
*Timing belt replaced at 64k
*Drivers side seat belt doesn't retract on it's own, still not sure why...maybe the car was in an accident (Going down to my garage to check)
*Tail light out, no biggie
*Front rotors resurfaced TWICE (needs new ones)
That's all I can think of at the moment.
