Could be your shift solenoids. These transmissions are fully electronic and are controlled by the ECU via solenoids in the valve body of the transmission. You'll have to go to a transmission shop to have it diagnosed to rule out more major problems, like the transmission itself. How many miles do you have on it?

Is over drive enabled? Im not sure about the 98 because I have a 99 but the O/D button is located on the gear selector. Does it happen all the time or just when the tranny is cold?

first its not my car, its my dads and i was just wondering if it could possibly be something that wouldnt cost lots of money to fix.
it has just about 270k and it probably is the trans but i was wondering if anything else could cause it
it does the same thing with OD on and off, no change in what happens
