Hmmmmm, never heard of that. I have a 1998 ES300 and when I do the same it shuts off while running when I disconnect the MAF. As far as I'm aware of this is normal. The ECU cant determine how much air is being brought into the combustion chamber and shuts down or the idle should change to a rough or slow idle. If your sensor is going bad, you will get a check engine light and a code of usually P0171.

The CEL means you have something wrong and when it disappears it means the ECU is trying to correct the issue, but it still remains in memory. You need to have your car scanned to see what code or codes is causing your issue. We can speculate what it could be, but if we know the code you have, then it narrows down what the issue can be. I dont know what year switched over to the OBD from version I to version II, but if you have OBDII, you can have Autozone or O'Reilys scan your car for the code.

OBD-II didn't start till '96. There is no code reader for OBD-I. You use a paper clip.

The MAF also senses airflow and turns on the fuel pump. If you disconnect it, the fuel pump quits.

...well the check engine light hasn"t been on in 2 weeks...
but i got a question....
what is the sensor that is located on the side of intake manifold right after the airbox connects to intake manifold pipe?
i had car running in idle just sitting,im under the hood..i disconnected the sensor on on the beginning of intake pipe side and the car rpms went up a tiny bit and it ran a tiny bit better i could hear the difference clearly...????

Could be a lot of things. Maybe the TPS? (Throttle Position Sensor)

Can you get a picture?

im a take a pic of the sensor in a lil when sun is up....

hey..i forgot to say...what this car sometimes did...
while im driving and decide to press pedal to floor to gun it (lol)sometimes it would choke/make the car jerk back and forth like gas was limited till i did not press all the way to the floor....but regular driving was still fine...
i guess it gave out from the cold....whatever it is.....

ok this is how car acts now since sitting for a week...
car takes me about 5 to 10 mins to start...
and if i try to gas it with pedal to start it makes it not wanna start more, but car tries but is choking on gas like it"s trying to open up but its opening up barely also..it will make the pop from the intake also..which makes a back fire sound almost....
i took off top screw of fuel filter had my boy watch when i tried to start the car and there was plenty of fluid shooting out of filter
so its not a fuel delivery issue...

car will only allow me to gas the car properly to about 2500 rpm once the car reaches the stable rpm level that my car usually has which it reaches after about 10 mins on its own after its been started...
wtf?

Could be a lot of things.

Check the intake hose for cracks.

Could be a faulty or very dirty/clogged cold start injector.

Could be faulty fuel pressure regulator (they do wear out).

Could be dirty injectors.

Push on the gas pedal all you want when you are starting the car, it makes no difference. The ECU ignores it until the engine is running. You are thinking of old carb'd systems, with chokes and accelerator pumps. EFI is smarter than we are.

Possible vacuum leak, I know I just had a run in with a broken IAC Valve letting air in after the maf....

I found the leak by letting the car idle then spraying starting fluid on the vacuum lines, the intake hose (accordian) and the intake manifold until I heard the idle change....

Quick Reply: car shuts off when i disconnect maf sensor on my 93 es 300....
