Which ES was the best?

I have had a 1992,1993 and a 1997.
My vote is totally for the 1997-2001 body style.
The 97+ is so much more a Lexus.
When I drive my mom's 1992 it feels like a camry in comparison.
Just my .02 cents

I have had 3 body styles of the ES. The short lived 1990-1991 ES250, 1992-1996 es300 and the 1997-2001 body.
My personal favorite is the 97-01 style.
My 1997 makes my mom's 92 feel like a camry in comparison.
For 1997+ Lexus really raised the par for the es IMO.
I think the new 02' is just plain old UGLY!!! eww!
The interior is really gorgeous but good god it looks like a auroura. A freaking space ship if you ask me!!!

Yeah, give me an '01 Platinum or Coach Edition in Black Onyx or Millenium Silver, with the rare optional HIDs. Although the 02 has a nicer interior, and the options for Navigation, Mark Levinson sound, and that cool rear sunshade...

My '96 ES300 Coach has been with me since '96, and I'm very delighted that this car still has a lot of life left (115k miles, well maintained and still going strong). It handles very well on the roads (smooth and rough), and the true acceleration can be easily and comfortably felt.
I drove a '01 ES300 loaner about a year ago, and let me tell you, the handling and "instant" feel are quite different on both cars! On the '01 loaner, it almost felt like the engine was hesitant when switching gears. Plus, maybe it's because of the fact that it's a loaner, but the engine was not as quiet as I would expect from a typical ES.
That's pretty much my opinion on both cars from different eras. I've heard stories that the '02 model feels just about the same as '01, if not worse. I've never driven a '02 so I wouldn't know it for sure. At any rate, I'm happy with my '96... 6 years with me, and it still drives like a dream!

Whatever floats your boat!
My mothers boyfriend says his 99 GS300 is quite the improvement from his 96 ES300 but still isn't satisfied with the hp.
He really should have purcharsed a GS400 (in 99)

92-96 had the projectors. i like those a lot, but they do look old. id like to see an updated one that looks like that. like if lexus made one this year with a little different styling and with a bigger engine and new interior.

As a proud owner of a '96, I don't think the front end with the projectors looks dated at all. What does look dated are the giant taillights with the amber bars, the rounded back end, and the lack of side-pull door handles (I don't know the proper name--the style like the RX, IS, current ES, LS) etc. It seems like that's the "in" style of door handle for cars made around '99 or later, from econo-boxes up to luxury flagships.
That and the 15" wheels. Everybody these days is using 16" or 17" wheels on entry-luxury models.
Can't complain, though. The design ages very well. A lot of people still think it's an '01 or '02 (admittedly, people who don't know much about cars

i dont mean that i think the lights are old. i like them. i meant the 92-96 model. i believe it when you say people think your es is newer. people think my 94 is a 98 all the time. but thats because of the way i keep it, they have really never seen a 98 es and known it was a 98. i like the car, i just mean little things like the doorhandles. just make my car, right now. get a factory to put out a few with changed door handles. better sealed headlights. smaller tail lights. lower, 17" wheels. 02 interior. newer engine, i would love that. (besides just getting a new SC or LS)

I personally don't think the '92-'96 looks old at all, but since they are so common (at least where I live) and they have been around for quite a while now, the familiarity makes it seem kind of dated. I still love the look though, it sits very low for a sedan (unlike the new ES, lol) and looks really sleek and sporty.
