2005 ES330 - SAE 5W-30 vs. 10W-40
The owners manual states that I should use SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil (I live in S.W. Idaho). I have always used Castrol GTX 10W-40 in just about all of my previous cars. I always felt that a higher viscosity oil (10W-40) would provide a better lubrication and not break down as fast as a lighter oil would.
The car had one previous owner and it has 120k miles on it. The previous owner probably 'went by the book' and put in the recommended 5W-30 (I am assuming).
Does anyone know if I would be worse off or better if I use 10W-40?

Is it a good idea to ignore Lexus Engineers' recommendations, and follow my own instead?
The answer should be obvious.

Stick with 5w30, car is engineered to run cooler so it needs the 5w30 weight anything thicker may be harder on the moving components when cold.

Use 5w-30. The bearings and cylinders in the engine are designed for a certain viscosity oil.
Use should only use 10w-40 in these cars when your valve seals or rings are worn to reduce oil consumption. You will not have to worry about that until like 300k miles though.
