Post Replacing the factory stereo with another - 1995 ES300

I was thinking of replacing the factory stereo with another OEM stereo as the one I have doesn't play through the right rear speaker, nor does the cassette player work. Upon looking on ebay for some, I noticed one seller mention a possible VIN lock, is there some kind of security going on I need to be aware of when replacing the stereo or is it easy to just remove it and replace? I want to stay stock.

Thank you for your time.

one possibility could be with the speaker itself is just gone, and too old and stopped working. and this problem may be more work solving than just getting a whole new speaker with an amp or aftermarket head unit as amp

Yeah I thought of that also, testing the speaker itself. I did eyeball it and wiggle the wires and they are firmly connected to the speaker. I assumed the amp in the deck is just old and that channel went out (along with the cassette deck which is really just a tape ejector at this point ;P).

I'm torn between sticking with a factory stereo or going with an aftermarket with more features.. It's a double sized deck as we all know, do single sized decks look good in that space when mounted proper? I just don't want it all tacky if you know what I mean. I want it to look clean is all.

save yourself the trouble, instead of fooling with mid 90s technology, convert to the new HU now. double din is cool, so is single. i have a flip out single. but the key to avoiding a tacky look is to get a quality dash install kit. if you really want to go all out for a clean install. get a custom made fiberglass kit, but that could be hundreds. my metra isnt the best fit, but it does just fine

Gotcha, looking at this one which seems to fit and has most features I was looking for (primarily iPhone4 compatibility).

It would be nice to also replace the speakers and add a sub or two later, but that's a ways off.

Thank you again.
