Default Buying Used 1996 es 300

I'm seriously looking at a 96 es 300 that my friend has for sale. It has 161k miles and in very good mechanical condition. Would this be a good car for commuting to work? What are some tips to look for when looking at this model.

How much? I would be concerned that the trans does not have much life left. If you have 4-5K to spend I would find a lower mileage Toyota. If you are set on buying the ES check for valve cover gasket leaks, engine mount problems, check engine light, and exhaust system problems. You are going to have some maintenance with a vehicle that old unless your friend has already taken care of everything.

I'm a return 96 ES300 owner with 188k I suggest searching on this forum and seeing...I got mine very low priced for 2 reason it had engine light on(emissions repaired fast) and oil leak main is coming from gasket/seal done thru doing timing belt(in a week) enjoy.

Its a great car for cruising but over 100k miles alot of problems come up, i have a 98 and ive already spent 5k for mainance alone, tuneups, gas pump replacements, etc.

Its great to have a nice higher mileage car for commuting to work on the highway. That way you are not putting a lot of miles on a new car every day -- plus the highway miles are easy on the car.

If the car is in good shape and has had regular maintenance -- it could easily go for another 40k without any problems. Does it have its original struts?

This type of car is a great "second car" -- its an old car and will not be as reliable as a new one. Having a backup is important.

Not great if its your only ride.
