Why are you trying to remove them? They don't connect the valve cover with the head.

I went out and looked at my engine. I don't see the third bolt you're talking about. Just to be clear, what car do you have, specifically the year? The two that hold the plastic cover are just non-removable studs.

edit: Here are some other shots I took when I did this last year. You only need to remove 8 bolts to remove the valve cover. Notice how there are no threaded holes underneath those cover bolts.

Well, yours truly just tried to remove the non-removable studs. So, now what since I've trashed them. Do I have to replace the whole cover? Or can they taken out?

Haha it's up to you. If you want to keep the engine cover, then yes you need a new valve cover or you need to find someone who can weld. Otherwise, don't sweat it - you might gain a few extra ponies without the cover weighing you down.

From some of the pictures I've seen, those are threaded holes into the valve cover. So, I'm not sure what gets them out to be replaced. If I can't figure something out today, I'm going to take it to a machine shop tommorrow to have them tapped out (assuming they are pressed in) or to find some other solution.

For example, in this ebay ad, you can see the holes: http://www.ebay.com/itm/94-03-TOYOTA...e76136&vxp=mtr

whethere they are pressed in or threaded, I'm not sure.

I'm just replacing the valve cover gasket, no biggie. But I do have some good news. On a whim, I decided to try a different set of vice grips and they promptly unscrewed. New ones are $1.35 from the dealer. So, whew!
