1998 ES300 finally decided to give me trouble
got 175K with no issues runs great! but lately my check engine keeps coming on,my mechanic keeps reseting cause is just something related with the gas cap " he says" . Then everytime i hit a puddle my A/C light flashes and it stops cooling, all i do is turn the A/C off, wait and then turn it on and it works.I also wana go bigger in tire size.I have 225/40/R18,and want to go with 45's tire.Anyone have the same issues? maybe it could help.

and replace your gas cap, if thats your check engine problem, its a real inexpensive fix. if that dont fix the light, you can check it off your list and go to the next common cause. be sure to clear codes after replacing the cap, then check the, if it comes back on.

Why would going over puddles cause it? so the squeak after i hit a puddle must be cause some play in the belt? i was thinking maybe the bearings on the pulley. The check engine light was reset by my mechanic, let's see if it does it again.thanks guys

Often when people speak of "Serpentine Belts" they are referring to the flat ribbed style of belt having the idler pulleys and automatic tensioner running on the back side of the belt.
VS .......the "V" belt that normally uses a static tensioner -- they normally need to be quite tight also.
I'm not sure what kind of AC clutch that vintage has. Many AC compressors have an RPM monitor to disengage the clutch if the compressor seizes up -- so any discrepancy in the RPMs -- like a belt getting wet in a puddle -- will trip the system to turn off the clutch.

This engine has TWO belts. Neither has an idler or tensioner pulley. The PS belt is tensioned by rotating the PS pump (and it's a PAIN to reach). The other belt drives the alternator and AC compressor, tension is set by rotating the alternator.
No serpentine belt.
