DIY change 98 ES300 PCV valve
It took longer time to start the engine when cool, before 2s only, now 4s or more.
And could smell the gas from the tail when start.
I thought it would be easy to change it. Unplug the old one & plug the new PCV.
But the 12yrs old parts refuse to go.
Took me some time to pickup the broken plastics.
Hope this helps.

normal for a 98..Change the grommet and PVC every year or 1.5 years and you are fine...
This model year has a over active EGR/PCV and they plug up fast...Clean the TB, IVAC and MAF soon too.

Yep. Trying to remove the 'rubber' grommet is painful, especially once it hardens. I had to change it out of my 93 Camry V6 and some of the plastic almost broke off and fell into the hole. My PCV wasn't clogged, but because the rubber turned hard, it didn't provide a good seal anymore. It leaked around the area and caused the idle to fluctuate.

snowmaker, thanks!
GSteg, bingo, symptoms were same as yours, it leaks around the 'rubber' grommet and caused the idle to fluctuate even long highway drive. Micro Forceps was used to pick the broke off from the hole.
After installed, the idles is silk smooth.
But still need 2-3 sec to start.
Will it helps to change the spark plugs?

I purchase a new PCV, but I noticed in these pictures a new rubber grommet is also present. Where do I find the black rubber grommet piece if my PCV value purchase didn't include it?

The same place where you got the PCV valve from? Just about any auto parts store will have it.

I had originally purchased the PCV on eBay, but I stopped by a local Toyota and they had some grommet in stock. I had the same problem as the OP, the grommet came out piece by piece, heh.

I got a Dorman aftermarket grommet from Autozone for a couple bucks. Excellent quality - will definitely buy it again.
