Question Fuel gage (snafu)

I've been keeping track of my fuel pump visits since January on my '96 ES300, and after analyzing the data, there seems to be something off about it. Normally, I fill up whenever I get my fuel gage as close to the "E" as I can (even with the warning light on). Knowing that the size of the fuel tank is 18.5 gal, and in the situation I'm in, I figure I would have on average 1.5 gallons left before each fill up. However, after looking at my real-time data, I seem to have at least 3 gallons left almost every time I fill up. I'm thinking there might be some sort of minor internal or mechanical error with the fuel gage. Has anyone ever run into this kind of situation before? Any comments about it? Don't worry, I've never run empty on the road

-Doug

It is very slow, and it never goes up all the way it seems, after I fill my tank I just fill it til the pump pops off, but it seems like it takes 5 min for the guage to keep up...meh

Yeah, I know what you mean, mine does the same thing. I wonder if that's typical for most Lexus cars I had a BMW 7-series a while ago, and the fuel gage needle would shoot up to "F" every time I fill up. Different strokes, different folks.

at least that's better than the opposite: imagine your needle isn't even near empty yet and you have no gas left. i just hate how after it hits the halfway mark, gas just seems to really drain at a quicker rate than ever and it fluctuates wildly. the first 50 or so miles after a complete tank fillup the needle seems to not budge.

Yeah, I can definately relate to what you are all saying about the gas gauge. I didnt know that there were 3.5 gallons left when it was on empty but that does make sense considering the most gas i have been able to put in my car at a fillup has been just a hair over 15 gallons.

So my '94 should have an 18.5 gallon tank?

Well, I am at 30 some miles and my gas guage is already off of the F.... I am so afraid of running out of gas...I freak out when its on a 1/4 tank...

me, i'll just try and keep it above the halfway mark. so no waiting til the marker hits the E. I never know when i will get stuck in traffic, can't find a suitable gas station (i try not to pump if the tanker has just delivered), or get in a car chase cuz i don't want to disappoint people watching the news with a boring end cuz i ran out of gas. btw, since school started i've gotten about 250 miles on a full tank (yeah i havent been filling at the halfway mark). my mileage has really gone sour since last week.

what kind of driving do you do?? i guess mostly fwy? i have never driven til my tank was dead empty but i know i wont get 400 miles. usually i get 300-something miles on a good tank. i've been getting 250 tops since school started cuz i drive 30 minutes to school (25 miles away) and idle in the parking lot for at least 45 minutes everyday looking for parking. i wonder if idling for that long could be bad for the car? i idle in neutral w/ the parking brake on. its a real fight for parking and i know one day someone will probably key my lex cuz i took their spot. i hope not.

i usually get between 250-300 miles. if i travel back home, and i use half the tank on I40, i get about 315 miles to the tank. that is when the light comes on, usually fills just under 15 gallons

i usually dont fill up til the light turns on.....and then as soon as its on, a gas station is the first thing i head for........... and nearly all my driving is free way.... i drive from Lake Norman to Asheville every other week, for when i come home for the weekends from school....which is a two hour straight drive there and back on interstate.....and every bit of the trip is interstate....so i put the cruise in 70 and go....cause I40 is crawling with cops, or at least the section from asheville to statesville is,,,,,

my mileage varies from time to time....but i have gotten about 380 on a tank several times

Thumbs up

GUYS, we must remember, when LEXUS came out they wanted to be different & known for luxury with things that would convenient the owner. I think that having so much gas left in reserve when the light goes on is the best thing. Especially when driving out of town late night when gas stations are hard to find open. PEACE

I've driven a ton on the low fuel light, and i've only gotten 14.8 gallons in. I like the 3.5 gallon saftey net that you guys are talking about, but when i want to run race gas, it's hard to take my tank down to a gallon without worrying about running out of gas (not that lexus had the whole race gas thing in mind ).
