1999 ES 300 Transmission Problem
My car won't shift into OD after its up to operating temperature. Little background. It's throwing codes for the VSV and knock sensor bank 2, which I'm going to fix in the next couple of weeks. But, would either of these codes be relative to the shifting problem? If I get into OD before its fully warmed up it will stay there and run just fine.
Actually, other than not shifting into OD, it runs smooth and strong all the time. Car has 132,000 mi. and I've had it since 68,000 mi. Recently replaced the ignition coils and plugs. I'm in the middle of trying the full tank of 91 octane, but not too hopeful. Next stop is the tranny shop, which I'm not looking forward to.
Anyone have this problem, if so what was cause and fix?
Thanks in advance.

When was the last time you replaced the transmission fluid? Try that first.

Don't I feel stupid. I will do this right away. Can this be easily done by a driveway mechanic, say like an oil change? If so, any visual aids available?

It can be done on your driveway. Just drain and fill...takes 3 - 3.5 quart of Dexron3 (double check!!).
The drain plug is a 10mm allen bolt on the driver side. Fill the new fluid through the dip stick hole.

I'll do the fluid change, but I sort of suspected the knock sensor (just ordered 2 online last night) because of something I read on CL. Since the VSV triggered the CEL first, I didn't know exactly when the knock sensor went out. Well I do now, it was when it stopped shifting into OD, which was during a four hour road trip. Gas mileage really sucked on that one. LOL.
I had the knock sensor on my 97 Camry V6 (loved that car) go out, but it was a 5-speed manual, so no shift problem.
Thanks, Gray!

If my experience is any indication, the OD lockout is a symptom as the trans goes into 'Limp' mode as a result of the Bank 2 sensor code. I had the Bank 2 noc sensor replaced (have to take off the intake manifold) and the problem has been resolved. The Check Engine/Trac Off lights remained on and I would lose OD after the engine was quite hot. The sensor was replaced abt 3.5 months ago; no problems since.

Thanks for the confirmation Lefty5.
Gray, I found the knock sensors (they are both the same for $50/ea. on Amazon Automotive. A little risky with aftermarket, considering the labor involved. But to save $250-$300 on parts, I went for it and ordered two ($110 with shipping).
