Angry better jump off the line....?

ok so i have a completely stock 98 es, and last night i was out on the road just drivin around with a friend of mine, he has a 2000 Jetta GLS 1.8T....so were at a light and there are pretty much no cars anywhere around so we decide just to have a little race....well ive raced my car before and i know how well it jumps off the line and everything...well this time we go and the es has the worst jump off the line ive ever experienced and the jetta gets a much better jump and he beats me up to like 30 mph but then were even from then on so he beats me by like 1-1.5 car lengths and we race for like 3 straight lights and the same exact thing happens and he beats me by the same amount each time and i can barely even catch up to him top end cuz he only has 150hp while i have 200 and his only weighs like 300 lbs less than mine so after like 75 or 80, i start catching up....he also only has an inline 4 while i have a v6...i understand he has like a small turbo in it but thats what gives him his 150.....so i dont know if theres somethin wrong with my car or if its just THAT slow off the line....if theres a problem, please explain....and if its that slow, what can i do to make a bit better just off the line, not caring too much about other things

thanks in advance

wow. how long has it been since your last tune up, air filter change and etc? check your air hose too. when mine was split i had the worst time picking up speed. i'd start there cuz i know an ES is supposed to have a pretty good jump off the line and 1st gear acceleration. good luck

The one thing after what you've said, it's gotta be the motor oil. It's most likely not working very well anymore, thus your engine is running nowhere near its highest potential. Try and get a change soon. What engine oil is everyone using? I've had Royal Purple for a while.

I've driven a 1.8T Jetta before, and it is indeed very quick off the line. The power levels out after the first few seconds though. The Jettas have a weird hair-trigger throttle that makes it leap off the line, but after that its not all that quick. It's possible nothing is wrong with your ES, the Jetta may just be quicker off the line. You should be able to kill him at any speed about 50 or so.

Are you talking about the air hose after the air filter? If so, where did you get the replacement hose and how much did it cost? Mine needs to be replaced, and I'd like to avoid the dealer if I can for financial purposes, but I don't know how easy it would be to find that hose somewhere else.

Um, if that 1.8T was a stick it could make easy work of any ES. Those things are a lot faster than people think. It produces gobs of torque at really low RPMs.

he should have been able to take 'em (if auto). One of my budz has an 02 1.8T auto and I can fade him pretty bad. But stick is prolly a whole diff. story.

Yeah, I was assuming that the Jetta was Auto. A stick Jetta 1.8 is pretty quick, barely slower than a Vr6. Put some mods into the 1.8 and you got a fast car for pretty cheap.

I remember when I rented a Mustang in Florida, I got blown out by a Jetta. I'll never forget it cause the next day I went back to Enterprise and traded the Mustang in for something else....lol

oh man that hose and the labor was expensive. about $300ish? it was done by a mechanic, who ends up buying the parts from the toyota dealer, so go figure. at least they returned the split air hose to me as a souvenir.

Well, hopefully the part itself isn't too expensive. I'm lucky and have a few mechanics in the family so my labor cost are minimal, but I guess I'll get a hold of a dealer and get the part. Does anyone know what it's called so I don't feel stupid trying to explain what it is when I go in?
