Default 02 Lexus ES300 O2 sensors

I have an 02 Lexus ES300 with codes 0031 and 0051 both bank 1 & 2 sensor 1 have changed them both out not once but twice and still have the same codes pop up with in minutes after i erase them and start it back up. What could be causing this? First i used a universal one first then second time i went back to denso which is the same as i took out.

Sounds like you might have a wiring issue. Might be time to do some electrical troubleshooting.

not likely to be wiring on both sensors at once

Why not? Both upstream sensors, if they share a ground the ground could be the issue. I would imagine they are both in the same harness, if it's chaffed somewhere or burned on the exhaust it would cause an issue with both. Otherwise, could be an ECM problem.

I have a 2000 which is quite a bit different but that's where I'd start if I had no other reference material to work with.

Sorry, that I do not have. I don't even have the wiring manual for my own car... yet.

I believe the 31 code is the heating circuit on that sensor -- is the 51 the heating circuit for the other sensor? If so I would look to see if a fuse protects them - It does on many cars.

-- odd that they would both go at the same time. Or did one fail and then the other? Since the heating circuit does not normally produce driving problems many ignore it until inspection time.

You did use the correct air/fuel sensor for you car -- best to use exact fits on Toyota products. They are not O2 sensors.

Get a vacuum leak test also. It may be caused by that too. I had same issue a few days before..and leaking brake booster was the issue and not the oxygen sensors. for more information click the link below

ok i will check to see if there is a fuse and yes it is the same problem with both sensors. i do believe it might be the wrong sensors. it was like this when we got it so we replaced them still had the problem so we went back with ones matching the ones i took out. but i notice that sensors are not the same for both sides but the ones i took out were exactly the same

I see -- well you may have to do a little homework.

I never use the universals: too many problems and when I do something myself I don't need the extra aggravation -- and the cost is normally not that much different.

Now with the Toyota air/fuel sensors -- they never had a generic and the correct ones tended to be a bit expensive. I am looking on Amazon and I see both generic and what they say are "direct fit" -- so maybe things have changed in the past year -- the prices are certainly lower. They used to always be above $150.00 for the A/F sensors. Many look to be the lower sensor.

I would check for a fuse and then try to nail down the correct Denso A/F sensor number -- I have always found Amazon to be a great place to get them.

Good luck

Before I bought off of Amazon (or even autozone or advance) I would go to rockauto.com

Yes -- Rockauto and also Autohaus -- I use both often.

Amazon surprises sometimes ---they have excellent prices on some parts -- sensors being one. And they ship so quick -- although I normally get my stuff from Rockauto very fast because they ship from DE or VA.

I buy a lot of stuff from Autuhaus because I own quite a few German cars -- did get a full set of Brembo rotors for the old ES from them.

My biggest concern with amazon or advance or autozone, et. al. is not so much price as it is getting the correct part. They carry far too much generic one-size fits all stuff for me and they don't always label it as such. With rockauto (and autohaus- I've owned 4 BMWs) they sell the correct part and if it is generic they say so.

I personally have never had that problem with Amazon and the sensors -- but I can certainly understand the concern. I have had Amazon tell me a particular spark plug is incorrect when I am looking at the original plug.

But they are a great place to purchase when you know the part number.

That is why the OP should search for the correct sensor and then cross reference to determine if the one he installed is compatible.
