I have never purchased a car, new or used, with any concern whatsoever for it's "book" value. Anyone, outside of a wealthy collector of exotic cars, who does is waisting their time. I purchase based on what the car is worth to me taking into account what I know it needs. Again, a car is a pit you throw money into, choose a pit that you like and don't worry too much about the market value.

200k miles isn't exactly a non-factor but I certainly would not reject a clean Lexus because of it. I rebuilt the engine in my 733i at 275,000 miles and could've kicked myself as it easily could've gone another 200k miles. Consider the cost of a timing belt or 60k mile service... not cheap and you are doing that on a relatively new car. Bottom line, good car or bad car.. they are all money pits. Throw yours down a pit that you like...

You can do a variety of tests (like the compression) that can tell you if an engine needs to be rebuilt rather than finding out the hard way.

I bought the car with an exhaust leak and a burned exhaust valve. I figured at 275k miles if I pull the head I may as well rebuild it all... I found out the BMW big six is good for 400-500k miles if properly maintained.
