worn leather steering wheel
i have a 92 es300, the paint on the leather steering wheel is worn out at 12 o'clock. I clean it with a good leather cleaner and then add a leather conditioner, but it actually feels worse-sticky & rough- after i clean it. I couldnt believe the amount of dirt that came off on the rag. I think some of the paint on the leather came off too. Is there a product out there that re-paints the leather? My only other option is to buy a leather wrap for the wheel. any recommendations?

You might want to check the site below - this is from another discussion on installing EOM wood dash kits. Most of these places provide either a lexus leather-or-wood sterring wheel...

Look for kit LX5-B at aaaexoticwood.com (the firm's site). It fits 94-96 ES, and includes the following pieces
4 pieces for the window/lock control areas on doors.
piece for the climate control
piece for the stock audio system
piece for the glove box door
piece that surrounds the triple air vent in the center console.
They also sell partial kits. I personally only want the door pieces, so they quoted me $98 for the 4 pieces.

I've got the same problem, the color is worn off the leather and the leather actually broke through in a spot at 12 o'clock. Honestly, it's the only part of my car that shows noticeable wear so I want to get it taken care of but haven't decided how. I'd really like the wood/leather wheel from the group buy a while back but I don't think I want to spend $400 or $500 on it. The only other good option I can think of is to find someone who will redo the leather, maybe try an upholstery shop. My uncle does leather work and repair, mostly shoes and jackets; but there's a chance he might be able to redo a wheel so I'll probably talk to him too, but it's bothersome for me.
All the leather care products I've seen say not to use them on steering wheels. I'm not sure why this is, but it's probably why they're making yours worse unless there are some products that are meant to work on wheels too.

I didn't want my wheel to fade, so I placed the wood-wheel in my ES and it gives a better look and it preserves the look of the original wheel. If only I can do the same with the leather seats...

wheel
hey lex- how much did it cost to get the wood wheel installed???
and where did you get it/have it done?
I love the wood wheel, i have it on my Acura MDX, it really does add style to the interior, plus i love the fell of it while driving.

Is that an overlay? Thats pretty cool.
I've heard that the steering wheel has a special coating on the leather to prevent wear that isnt anywhere else on the upholstery, thats why they say not to use leather cleaners on the wheel. I had this same problem on my Explorer and wound up replacing the whole wheel rim. One of the only good points to owning a Ford...parts are a lot less expensive, only cost like $160.

It's an over-lay and I believe it was $170 - They were having a sale at the time because I think the regular price for that wheel was $220. I argued with Lexus Dealers and Lexus Collision centers since 2000 about the price of the wheel from the dealer ($2,200)...
