Cool 99 lexus es300 wont shift into reverse or out of first gear

I fixed it for 50 miles. Cleaned out the filter and put new fluids. drove 2 days 50 miles and now it wont go into reverse wich is a new malfunction. Is the tranny done or is it something retarded like a computer component or sensor? Or what are the possibilities. thanks

Well, with the dearth of information it's difficult to say. Is the check engine lamp on? If the light is one you need to scan it for codes to see if you might have a part failure or possibly a controller issue. Have you checked the condition of the fluid? Sounds like you'll need to drop the pan and check the filter. If there are large chunks or the valve body is blocked then it sounds like you'll be needing a rebuild or replacement.

You need more information before you can determine how to proceed.

Sorry, was wayy tired when I posted. Ok so I bought this car for $400 from original owner and he ALWAYS took it to lexus dealership for whatever work/maintenance etc and he said it needed a tranny. Well we got the car and we put it up on a rack, pulled the pan and the filter was pretty bad. We just cleaned it by using this shop hose that pumps out i dont know what. Some kind of degreaser/cleaner. Filled it back up with fluid and my dad drove it around the area for a bit no problem. Before it would drive for maybe a min and then it wouldnt go in gear or catch gear. Basically when it started warming up. I drove it for 2 days no problems except I felt like i kept hearing noises and a low grinding I can feel on the floorboard off and on. On sunday after work i got in my car, started driving and felt like it missed and after that wouldnt go out of first gear. No codes,no check engine light but whats wierd is now my airbag light that usually blinks, isnt anymore. Might be just a coincidence. Pulled into a gas station to check fluid and added like a half qrt wich didnt do anything. And wouldnt go into reverse pulling out of the gas station. So I just dnt want to put a new tranny and all of a sudden it was a computer problem the whole time. my dad says its just broken. Well why did it work for those few days then dad? Feel like we shoulda replaced the filter instead of just cleaning the damn thing. I dnt know. any thoughts besides this post being sooo long? Sorry. ha

My guess is that there are particles blocking a bunch of passages in your transmission. When you dropped the pan and cleaned the filter, it might have helped loosen them a little bit, but it's still pretty bad. I don't know much about automatic transmissions, except that when they die - they really die.

Based on what you've written it sounds like an internal transmission issue. Pull the pan again and check the filter. If it's clogged and such again then your clutches are coming apart or a seal or seals are coming apart. If the filter is clean you may still have an issue or not. If it's clean, install the pan and fill it. At this point you really need to hook up a toyota or lexus scan tool to it so you can look at streaming data and see if your internal pressures are correct.

Drop your transmission pan. If you have a bunch of metal shavings in it. You most likely need a new transmission.

If you don't have any metal shavings in it, it will most likely be a solenoid. Usually you will have a check engine light on.

But most likely you need a new transmission. Take it to a transmission shop. Its too hard to determine what the cause is because automatic transmission problems are very complicated.

hey there. honestly i had to get a new tranny or used. The thing is you gotta check what bolt you have for a tranny. 1 is really cheap and the other, well, is triple that. If I were you i would find a few bottles of transx and drain a quart out of tranny and put 2 bottles of transx in. cause after i bought a used tranny it went out again almost 2 years later.went thru the same deal. took it in to the shop and paid them 300$ to drop the pan and take the hydraulic selenoid out and check if its clogged. Or some part at least. And it was clean. Said i needed to rebuild my trans. Well on my way home driving in 2nd gear i stopped at the auto parst store bought the transx put it in and walah. A few miles down the road maybe ten my car shifted rough into third. Long story short transx let me drive my car for another year and a half. i would have to add every month and more frequently the more i drove. you Gotta at least try it, let me know the turnout. Stuff is amazing
