Busted struts? :egads: /Thinking about selling
From the looks of it, it seems like my rear struts are shot to hell. the boots are torn to bits and theres fluid all over the struts. they seem to work fine with the exception of the rattling noise in the truck. which may be from the bushings going bad. my friends have described the noise as a raccoon living in my trunk.
so my question is whats it going to cost me to fix this? & the amount of time and work its going to take.
I'm really debating as to fix it or not. the car already has a rack and pinion that needs to be replaced also needs a set of tires & alignment other than that its a pretty clean car. The reason I'm thinking about selling is because I am transferring schools and plan to live on campus and bike/walk around. since I will no longer be going to a commuter school, I don't see the need for a car and all the extra expenses like insurance and gas.
its got 157k on the clock and in good shape- clean title. what do you think is a fair price if I post on craigslist?

Did you start the job yet and if not can you take some pictures when you do it? Going to need to do mine soon and would appreciate any guidance. I know you have to take the back seat out for the rear. Thanks.

It is a one-person job. I did it on a few vehicles inside my garage.
All you need is a jack and jack stands.
The rear seat has to be removed (which is not hard) so that you can access the strut mount nuts.

You should replace the whole assembly (i.e. spring, strut mount, strut, boot). You should look into Monroe Quick Strut.
And since you are already there, you should also check sway bar bushings and end links. Also check the ball joints and tie rods.

I've got a 2001 ES300 with a similar problem.
Something in the suspension is rattling like crazy, when going over bumps or potholes etc. I think it's coming from the front too. I should go in somewhere and get it checked out but I've been lazy. The car has 180,000 km on it.
What do you guys think it could be?

its a 96.
I posted the car on craigslist and so far all the interest I've been getting are from scammers.
anyways, shopped around for quotes and got some outrageous prices. some shops wanted 800+ just for the rack and pinion job(and some of them don't do the alignment afterwards). and another 4-5 hundred for the struts.
The best that I though was reasonable quoted 475 including new tie rods, and alignment. with a 3 month warranty on parts and labor & 375 for both rear struts. should I have anything else anything else lookedat /replaced while its in the shop. I plan on driving this car through 3 more Michigan winters.

If you plan on keeping it for three more winters, I would make sure you get the best quality for what you pay. Sometimes the cheapest isn't always the best. Not saying the cheapest guy is not the way to go, just be careful you get everything you pay for. Take pictures if you can of everything you are going to replace and after job is done if this is not a garage thats certified, ask to see the parts they removed. Other then the trans flush with new filter and an oil change I would wait until you get a code for anything before replacing.
