Default Change Bank 1, 02 sensor on 99 ES with pics

After getting help from LexMex on his thread in the RX forum of how to change the bank 1, 02 sensor which is the last of three which under the body would be positioned below the drivers seat and attached to the muffler, decided to post some pics in addition to his with some small differences for the ES300.

Was getting error code P0420 with check engine light on.

The sensor where attached to the muffler is not held on with bolts as the RX but screwed into the muffler housing. Spray a bunch of PB Blaster and using a large 7/8 inch wrench with a hollow pipe to make it an extension over the wrench for leverage, muscle it off. Sorry but no pictures of it but if you look at the drivers side with the door open, it is about 25 inches in under the car. Can't miss it. Just look on the muffler.

Removed the negative from the battery, then the seat with the 4 bolts holding it in place. three on the floor and one in the rear towards middle console which is attached horizontal versus the other three being vertical. Here is a pic of that one on the side.

Tilted back seat to disconnect the 3 electronic connectors under the seat. Mine were white blue and yellow as shown.

After moving the seat which I placed on the back seat, gives you plenty of room to do the job. Just need to be careful when moving the drivers seat around, because the part attached to the seat which holds that horizontal bolt is very sharp and if not careful can tear up the leather back seat or anything else it gets near.
Here is a pic of it.

When you have the seat out, might as well clean the carpet up a bit if dirty
Started trying to figure out where the connection piece enters the car and where it connects under the carpet which has to be removed to get at it. It is not similar to the RX in that it comes up through the car a little more forward just behind the front bolt location closest to the center console. It is attached with a rubber boot that after wd40 all over it, pulls into the car. Here are two pics of the location it enters the car with the boot in place. First pic you can see the bolt hole which holds the seat in place at the 10 o'clock position in pic for an idea of where that hole going out is. Second is a little fuzzy sorry.

If you take note on the second pic, the connector in gray on the left is the connector for the sensor. After connected it does a 180 and then goes out that rubber boot in the pic.

Here is a pic of the electrical connector location which is directly above those heater/cooling vents that are just below the front of the drivers seat.

Now here is the tricky part. the boot if never replaced is around the cord of the sensor and you have to cut the old sensor cord to get it off but there is no way to get it on the new sensor without cutting it which I did.

Here is a pic of the sensor with the boot not yet attached and cut and then re-applied and wrapped in electrical tape.

The other issue you need to watch out for is if you order the sensor which I am now thinking for the most part, all three the same, you need to make sure the cord it attaches to is long enough to reach its destination in the muffler. I had to remove the plastic piece holding it in place above the vents and move the connection closer to the hole that goes out to the bottom of the car in order for it to reach and be long enough. It is very tight.

That's about it. Put the battery cable on, started the car and the engine check light was gone.
Good luck.
